Women and children who are trafficked for sex are susceptible to violence, more likely to be addicted to drugs or alcohol AND at increased risk of infection or disease.
Groomed and lured, often by promises of affection, security, money or even a better lifestyle, these victims soon find themselves trapped...and that isolation often leads to despair and self-harm.
In fact, three in four women in the sex industry have attempted suicide. (At Courage for Freedom, we believe this to be an under-reported statistic.)
Not only that, suicide is now the second leading cause of death for people under 25.
The level of desperation is almost unimaginable.
A few days ago (September 10, in fact) was World Suicide Prevention Day. Let’s take this opportunity to reflect on the predicament these women and children are in, and join our effort to eradicate human trafficking in Canada.
